Get Me Re-Write!

Well, it's nice that the New York Times did a little preview piece on the Lions today. But of course it was a little marred by a serious factual error:

"The Lions have not won a league championship since 1961. They have finished over .500 only once since 1971, when they were 5-4-1 in 1994. Columbia’s 5-5 record last year was widely regarded as a huge step forward."

So that 8-2 season we had in 1996 was just my imagination?

Oh well... thanks for trying.

They must have borrowed the editor from the Middle East desk... you know, the one who gets no facts correct.

To Anonymous defender of the Times

I think the NY Times can do better, the problem with the article is that an error like stating our best record in 36 years was 5-4-1 - makes us look a lot worse than we are.

"the most famous newspaper" in the world should be held to a high standard of accuracy; they are not doing us any favors by printing unfactual articles.

Why on earth would anyone expecting fairness and accuracy on most ANY topic expect such from the New York Times?

Does anyone remember, in the days when Dorothy Schiff owned the New York Post and the paper itself was a very liberal but perennially struggling daily, editor James Wechsler's generally highly partisan columns about Lions football? He was a Columbia grad and he was a real fan and we have not had his like in our corner for several decades now. His witty partisanship is missed. Would that the Post, or the Times or the Daily News, had such to cover the resourgence of the Lions now.

Why is anyone shocked by the inaccuracies in the Times' story? The "New York" Times' coverage of local college and high school sports in New York City since the 1950's has been absolutely abysmal. Probaly no major newspaper in the United States does so poorly with its local college and high school sports coverage as the Times. The principal thing to remember about the Times is that it considers itself today to be a "national" newspaper whose Metropolitan New York readership is taken for granted. Symbolically, all local New York Metropolitan news is relegated to Section "B." The good news for Times haters is that the Times is unlikely to survive much longer in its present form given that newspaper circulation everywhere is certain to decline substantially in this Internet Age.

If the WSJ had a sports page I would never buy the Times.

Despite the inaccuracies, I thought the author did a good job capturing a sense of Coach Wilson's ability to teach the game, respect and earn respect on the playing field, as well as act as the prepared field general that he is. Attention all potential recruits: this guy is a special coach.
