Scrimmage Report
The GoColumbiaLions.com website has the sad details of what seems like an ugly day for the Lions up at Harvard. But there were no reports of any injuries, and Harvard can win all the meaningless scrimmages against us that it likes. Remember, they dominated us pretty clearly in the scrimmage last season and Columbia still started the season stronger than ever.
Every year, I'm not sure what to make of these scrimmages. They rarely seem to tell us much, but this year could always be that year that they do. Hopefully not.

48-6 is a mauling anyway you spin it. Hopefully a good wake up call for the young Lions. Sounds like there is alot of work to do on both sides of the ball before taking on a decent rams team.
The scary part is not the 48 given up when half the starting "D" didn't play. It's the no touchdown offense vs. a Harvard defense that's not that good!!!!
We get to start anew on the 15th. We will all know better after then

Jake,
We keep hearing about the "dinged" starters on defense. Can you tell us who's out?
According to the Columbia Athletics website, our returning Ivy League Championship women's soccer team defeated Miami of Ohio 2-0 with freshman Chrissy Butler, a high school All-American, scoring one of Columbia's two goals. Her father, Jerry Butler was a Pro Bowl wide receiver for the Buffalo Bills. Maybe we can sneak him on the field against one of our rivals this season.
As the parent of a Columbia player, I felt that the team was well-coached, disciplined and fought hard. They are a young team (68 freshmen and sophomores out of 100 on the roster). They were missing their first team quarterback and one of the tight ends, and playing a highly-ranked opponent. The score was very unbalanced, but the Columbia kids rode four hours in a bus to play an away game, which for most of them was the first of their collegiate career. The Lions are a work in progress, with great things ahead.
Jerry Butler is now Director of Player Development for the Cleveland Browns. He was the highest rated wide receiver in the nation when he graduated from Clemson and then he became an All-Pro wide receiver for the Buffalo Bills. His daughter, Chrissy, a freshman at Columbia, was a high school All-America soccer player. Jake, I suggest that you might consider trying to arrange an interview with Mr. Butler at some future date.
With all due respect to the player's parent with the previous comments, as a former player during a very difficult period in the program, there is no more difficult Ivy team to play for then Columbia with the commute to practice, very mediocre facilities, poor student body support etc etc etc. Those are all excuses and as Brian Dennehy said in his very eloquent speech at this year's Ivy Football dinner,"it's time to forget about all of that, buckle up the chin strap and play some football"
Can anyone who was at the game tell us anything about the other QBs? Anyone look poised? Any explanation for the six sacks? Was the O line just not blocking very well? Were the QBs holding on to the ball too long? Something else? All of the above? Also, what happened to the running game?
Several O-line players who have been practicing at the one and two deep levels were injured prior to the scrimmage and did not play. The same was true for the defense. Many, if not most, of the injured were dinged up bad enough to miss a few days of contact but should be back for the first game
The bus ride was SEVEN HOURS, with our guys sitting in a nightmare traffic jam on route 95. The coaches played everybody. Let's give our guys some slack here.
NW thinks we basically didn't show up. Poor execution, etc. I would not jump off a bridge. He played everybody, including a lot of first years in the first half. We'll be ready.
Too many injuries...a problem there. Shoop was right about one thing, "No more excuses!" (although he didn't practice what he preached).
Tell us more about the injuries. It would appear that most of those hurt will be able to play against Fordham. Is that accurate?

How did Olawale do? Is his passing better than Kelly's? And did he get to run?
It was hard to judge Millie because he's a "running" QB. Since the rules were the QB is down when touched, he was at a disadvantage. I'm sure that he would have run over the DB's in a game situation. Passing not yet there.
No big deal that we lost a meaningless scrimmage. I think the strength of our team is this coaching staff and I'm pretty sure they played this thing pretty "vanilla". If they don't build off of this poor showing then we have a problem.
Not to make ANY excuses, but anyone that's been stuck on a bus for 7 straight hours knows how draining that can be, especially when you're expecting the trip to only be half that long. The hug and kiss from granda after that trip can knock you on your butt, let alone a 270 pound tackle.
