Breaking Down the Numbers
Fordham's John Skelton will face a tougher opponent this Saturday
All of a sudden, the week one opener at Fordham is looking like a bit more of a challenge after that 27-23 win at Rhode Island Saturday.
But you know me, my favorite stat is 3rd down passing. In football, it's when the chips are on the table. The offense and the defense know they have have to put their best foot forward.
So how did Fordham starter John Skelton do on 3rd down? Just okay. He went three-for-nine for 44 yards, three 1st downs, no TD's or Int's, and two sacks for a total loss of 19 yards. (FYI: A few years ago, the NCAA stopped deducting yards lost from sacks from the passing totals and started taking them away from rushing totals. I was more of a fan of the old system).
It's also worth noting that all three of Skelton's INT's came on 1st downs, something I attribute to a young QB's excitement over an aggressive play call.
The Fordham defense had some good individual efforts, led by Isiejah Allen who had 11 tackles, one of them a sack, and an interception. The man I consider to be the best overall player on the entire Ram team, Earl Hudnell, had four tackles, one of them a 13-yard sack, and "QB hurry."
But overall, the Rams gave up a startling 319 yards rushing, which is a very surprising stat in a win. Eight URI penalties really cost the home team, especially a crucial pass interference on Fordham's final drive on a 4th and 15 play.
But the stats don't tell the entire story either, as I thought Fordham's resilience despite being a generally young team was impressive.
We'll learn a lot more about the Rams this Saturday when they host Albany. The Great Danes lost to Colgate in a tough defense battle at Colgate, 13-11. Colgate only threw the ball 15 times the entire game, so Albany will be getting an entirely different look with Fordham's run and shoot offense. And Albany will also be looking
How good did Lafayette look in Saturday's 49-10 win over Marist? Well you can look at the final stats and draw your own conclusions.
Lafayette's starter, Mike DiPaola went two-for-four on 3rd down for 55 yards, and two 1st downs. That's an amazing 13.7 yards per 3rd down attempt.
Even more impressive was the Leopard running game, with four backs averaging more than six yards a carry.
On the flip side, Marist may be switching QB's for this Saturday's contest at San Diego.
Starter Matt Semerano was a woeful three-for-eleven passing, and on third down he was even worse, going one-for-six for NEGATIVE one yard, zero first downs, and three sacks. His replacement, Stephen McGrath, did much better, albeit against what was probably the Lafayette scrubs. Still, on 3rd downs, McGrath was four-for-four for 39 yards, four 1st downs, one touchdown, and only one sack.

Spectator has a teaser on Tuesday's sports page (for a football article that will run tomorrow) that says Craig Hormann is still recuperating and will not play in the opener.
So we'll be starting an inexperienced quarterback to go with an unproven offense, and we graduated five key starters from our defense (Crawford, Brekke, Abrams, Schmidt, and Nunez).
Until we demonstrate we can score points, I'm being very cautious about this team.

Shane Kelly is an excellent quarterback
Caution is good, enthusiasm is much better. Columbia will defeat Fordham and Marist in the two non-league opening games with or without Craig Hormann. In fact, if Craig doesn't play, the Columbia Team will be motivated to win these games for him. It also follows that by game #3, Columbia will have at least two outstanding quarterbacks with experience leading the team. Go Lions!
Thanks for the heads up on the teaser. I think we should start Kelly at QB, with Olawole coming in for spot duty to keep the defense on it's toes. Imagine the nightmare opposing coaches would face having to prepare for a strong running QB 10 plays per game in addition to a traditional dropback passer for the rest of the game
I am incapable of anything other than unabashed optimism. I think that this is the deepest team we have had since '96, and the defense will actually be stronger than last year's fine group. This year's incoming class is every bit as good as last year's. We are bigger, stronger and faster. We have learned how to win. We have a few younger players who are poised for break-out seasons on both sides of the ball. And Kelly is a legitimate talent with vison and a big league arm. MA is a year older and capable of being a defensive coordinator's nightmare.
On paper and in the virtual universe, we look good. But Georgetown was a battle last year in the second half, lest we forget, and it really shouldn't have been one.
So caution is good, particularly given the unsettling QB situation. Yes, Kelly comes from a big-time program, but it's just not a very good big-time program. (Which I'm betting he reallized quickly enough.) And MA was just not Craig Hormann whenever he played last year.
So it may well come down to coaching against Fordham, especially defensive coaching. And there I think Columbia might just have a solid edge. I view this as caution eventually bubbling over into "rational enthusiasm."

This particular matchup on the 15th,just like all Liberty Cup games beforehand, has, regardless of score, been about field position i.e. special teams and turnovers. So if coaching has anything to do with the outcome I will venture to say it will be the special teams coach we will be highlighting, for better or worse at days' end!!

Our Rams have a big test this weekend before we can start thinking about you guys. However, as a fan I'm already looking forward to another Liberty Cup game and a chance at some revenge for last year's drubbing.
I wasn't sure where else to post this but I was also hoping you could help me spread the word here to your fan base. We're going to have a Fordham Kids Park open 2 hours prior to the 6pm kickoff next week. More details are on the Fordham board (fordhamfans.com) but we'd love all fans, not just Ram fans, to be able to take advantage of it and hopefully have a great gameday while visiting us in the Bronx. There will be 3 "jumpers" there - a slide, an obstacle course and a regular jumper - and our cheerleaders will be there doing facepainting for the young'ns. They'll be more than happy to do a nice powder blue CU on any little cheeks as long as you all don't mind that they'll only be provided with maroon paint and there's a very good chance they'll misspell 'CU' by using an 'F' but it'll still look cute as hell (the misspell comment is my alley-oop for you guys).
Again, looking forward to a great one. Hope anyone coming up also knows they can make a nice day of it in the typically under-explored Bronx by going to the adjacent Bronx Zoo, Botanical Gardens and Little Italy in the Bronx for a pre game celebration or to drown out those post game sorrows.
All the best. Hope you guys run the table ... AFTER next week.
Thanks for the heads up, I will post this now.
