On Scrimmages and Surprises

The GoColumbiaLions.com website has a brief report about the final intrasquad scrimmage yesterday at Wien Stadium. I would agree with Coach Wilson's assessments, especially the comments about the penalties in the latter stages of the scrimmage.

(By the way, at the top of the official recap of the scrimmage is a nice little 30-second commercial for the new season complete with some new highlights. Check it out!)

Fordham surprised me with a spirited performance on the road to defeat URI, 27-23 yesterday. The biggest shock was senior tailback Jonte Coven's 119-yard, two touchdown performance. Coven has had nothing but chances in the last few years to prove himself, but never really showed much until yesterday. Perhaps the run-and-shoot offense suits him. Sophomore starting QB John Skelton threw three interceptions, but gathered himself in time to direct the game-winning drive. That drive was aided by a crucial Rhode Island pass interference penalty, but Fordham still looks much improved over last year.

There was no surprise in Lafayette's 49-10 dismantling of Marist last night. The Leopards held the Red Foxes to -14 yards rushing and just 100 net yards passing.
