Nice piece in tomorrow's New York Times about the Lions.

Some quick thoughts: Fordham's offense has been impressive this season with Skelton throwing the ball from behind a big offensive line to several talented young receivers. Fordham also has some quality running backs. Last year the Columbia defense was able to pressure the Fordham quarterbacks into making big mistakes leading to a couple of scores. Hopefully, the Columbia "D" can do it again. Fordham's defense has not been as successful as its offense. Columbia should be able to move the ball on the ground and thru the air. Go Lions!
Random comment - why is it the Ivy League can't add another game (or two) at the start of the season? Why does just about every other team in America have two games under their belt???
Also, don't get me started on why Ivy teams can't make the (formerly) I-AA playoffs...
I think the players would be very excited to have the extra game and the opportunity to show how well they stack up against some of the other competition...
It's all in the academics. Columbia football players may very well be the brightest guys in the world, but a 12-game schedule would pose quite a challenge for the players given Columbia's rigourous academic requirements. I'll settle for a 10-0 record and an Ivy League Championship. After that happens, if the players want to lobby for a longer season, great, but not until then.
I don't think any extra game in the first week of September would hurt academics at all. What is even going on in the classroom at that point? They could even play a game before classes start. That just seems like a really poor argument to me. Also, not letting Ivy league schools play in the post season makes zero sense. It would only affect one team per year and for only as long as they were still in the tournament. I'm sure the kids could find a way to get their work done, they always do. Also, if these schools are so concerned with their football players getting some work done, why don't they make it a little easier on them during the season by giving them some concessions? The location of Columbia's stadium costs students valuable study time every single day, much more so than one extra game would. Why not make arrangements for a practice facility closer to campus? Or provide better transportation? Or better/expanded academic support to the players?
It also affects recruiting. An athlete who puts in the amount of time necessary to reach a high enough level to be considered a viable candidate for a Division I college is someone who loves to compete. Why not start Sept 1 like everyone else did and be part of post season play? If Stanford, Vanderbilt and Notre Dame can do it why not the teams in the Ivy League? My son is a potential 2008 Columbia recruit (which is how I discovered this blog) and these are some thoughts he has expressed to me.
s/Football Mom
Well, a lot of the REAL REASON the league is opposed to this is cost. Football is ultimately a profitable enterprise for the Ivies, but in an indirect way. The cost and challenges connected to staffing home games and arranging road trips is enormous, and the athletic departments' budgets are always pretty Spartan.
Of course, I support more games and joining the playoff system, but I understand the challenges facing the A.D.'s and their staffs.
Despite all of the objecdtions, I actually think this will all change in the next few years.
The Ivies do not start unt5l mid-September because they believe that freshman balplayers should first be acclimated into student life before the schedule for the season takes over. At the Ivies, the term student athlete means just that. At ND, or Stanford, or Vandy, football players are not integrated into student life to the same degree. To football Mom, your son will get a better all around experience if he goes to columbia than if he goes to a school in which footbal is a job more than anything.
