Game Changer?

Fordham heads to Dayton's Welcome Stadium this Saturday for a 1pm game

Scouting Fordham

The Patriot League has named Fordham sophomore linebacker Nick Magiera defensive Player of the Week after he had seven tackles, four for a loss, including two sacks in the Rams' 16-0 win over Rhode Island Sunday.

Fordham's defense was considered to be the weaker of the two main units coming into this season. It appears that may not be so true after last week. Magiera may be a big reason for the overall improvement.

But Fordham takes on the University of Dayton in Ohio this Saturday and the Flyers offense may be a lot more potent than URI's. Dayton held off a furious Ram comeback in The Bronx last season and held on for a 31-24 win.

We will be watching closely.

Speaking of watching, we were watching to see if one of Columbia's recruits that got away, Tim Waller, got into the Hoyas opening game win at Howard last Saturday. He did not. That's not surprising, given he's a freshman, but you never know.

Tim Waller did not get away. He wanted to come but was not offered by the coaches. I was disappointed because he is a terrific LB, but the coaches may have been concerned about his size.

I'll be watching Fordham's ability to run the football. They certainly ran at will against us in last years game to the tune of 323 yards effectively setting the tone for the season. I still feel that we are at a tremendous disadvantage playing the Rams as our opener
when they will have played 2 games to our none.

Also look at the number of really great linebackers we have. The position is just loaded with talent!

But we will have been able to scout Fordham, while they will not have any idea as to our tendencies.

Doc, there were three run stoppers playing badly hurt when we opened at Fordham last year. No excuses this year! Those three are healthy and ready to go, so we'll get an early look at our ability to stop the run on the 20th.

Thanks 4th and 10; there is so little information coming out over the last week. It would be nice to know if any first years are impact type guys. Today's Spec reports that Princeton is starting a few. I'm assuming that the most likely surprises will be on defense. I imagine that the offense is probably going to have few if any surprises.

Agreed that scouting is important but timing and execution stand no better test than a game situation.
Especially important since we are starting new QB's. Thanks for the info on the 2007 opener linebacker situation.
