Slipping to Victory

Columbia sent the Fordham crowd home sad

Game of the Day (Day 12)

September 26, 1992

Columbia 18 Fordham 9

A rainy field greeted the Lions and Rams for an early season tilt at Jack Coffey Stadium in The Bronx. In the end, the defenses dominated in an 18-9 CU win.

Things started out sloppy for Columbia as QB Chad Andrzejewski fumbled deep in the Lions' end on the first possession of the game, but the Columbia defense stiffened and only allowed a field goal for Fordham.

On their next possession, the Lions drove 62 yards down the field and made it 7-3 on a great play-action fake by Andrzejewski who ended up tossing a three-yard TD pass to tight end Johnny Greenfield.

Then luck came into play for Columbia. Early in the second quarter, Andrzejewski threw and interception to Fordham's Mike Wilt at the Ram eight. But Wilt cut back, WAY back, on the return and ended up getting tackled in the end zone by CU wide receiver Mike Sardo for a safety! That made it 9-3 Lions. A short field goal before halftime made it 12-3.

Late in the third quarter, Columbia fumbled the ball away at their own 11 and the Rams quickly score to make it 12-9. But on their next series, Des Werthman picked off a Fordham pass and rumbled 76 yards for the game-icing TD.

Jake:

I was comparing the new roster referencing the weights of the team. It would seem reasonable that with the off season training that the new weights would reflect growth. There was no change from 07 to 08???

Do you have a feel as to why?

Tim:

The new weights and measures have not yet been posted on the site. I realize this was done much earlier last year, but I'm not sure when this will be updated. Of course, I expect that to at least be done by the time the Fordham game notes are released in a week or so.

Jake,

Still nothing on the Brown scrimmage? Interestingly, there's also no word about it on the Brown football website. A conspiracy to keep some of us in the dark??

We apparently did alright in the scrimmage against Brown and more importantly no injuries. Brown, unfortunately, lost one of their better players for the season in a non contact play. I didn't get a name but wish him a speedy recovery.
