Wash On/Wash Off

Two different schools were faced with the exact same weather last night in the New York City area and they both responded differently.

Fordham decided to postpone its season opener in The Bronx and will play the University of Rhode Island at noon Sunday instead.

But the brave souls at Marist went ahead with their home opener against Lafayette and lost 28-6 to the Leopards in the torrential downpour.

Of particular concern for Columbia, who plays Lafayette in week 4 at Wien Stadium, was the play of Maurice White. White had 212 yards rushing on 29 carries with two touchdowns. Leopard QB Rob Curley threw the ball just 11 times in the heavy weather and still nailed a TD pass and avoided any interceptions.

Marist's Bo Ehikioya, who had a big game against the Lions last year, was held to just 33 yards on 12 carries with one TD.

Week 2 opponent Towson rallied for a 21-16 home opener win over Morgan State. Towson's starting QB Sean Schaefer was 18 of 25 for 243 yards, 3 TD's and 1 INT.

Game of the Day (Day 14)

Columbia 31 Marist 7

Marist's brave decision to go ahead with the game Saturday night reminded me of the not-so-nice weather during the Lions gamea against the Red Foxes last year.

Here's my complete review of that game from 2007.

And my compliments go to the folks at Marist for continuing to schedule tougher opponents from the Ivy and Patriot Leagues.

The team has the 07 highlight film up on the premium home page at Gocolumbialions.com. I know they were 1-9 but you can still find enough good plays to get you excited for the season and Joe Case does a very good job with it.

Just checked the Fordham-Rhode Island score,16-0 Fordham two min. left in the game. Stat line is very dominant for Fordham. Looks like they controled the game and probably should have scored more. Avg. 5.8 per rush and QB had over 260 yds. with good comp. pct. Had lots of pressure on QB and pitched a shutout. Lions beware.
