Pelini Family Affair

Husker Coach Bo Pelini has a lot of Columbia family ties

Matt Sodl emailed me to point out that Nebraska Head Coach Bo Pelini, who guided the Huskers to a 26-21 win in the Gator Bowl yesterday, has a lot of family ties to Columbia.

First off, one of his Nebraska assistants is his brother Carl Pelini, who played two years for the Lions before eligibility issues and other hurdles convinced him to quit football and transfer back home to Youngstown State.

But Bo's older brother Vince Pelini '81, was a 1st Team All Ivy linebacker for the Lions and deservedly so. In late 2007, I blogged about Vince's son Mark, who plays at Cardinal Mooney high school in Youngstown and is highly-regarded offensive lineman prospect. I mistakenly identified him as a senior in 2007, but he is actually a current junior and will be a senior for the 2009 season.

According to Shad Sommers' profile in Scout.com, Columbia has offered him, but there is no indication in that write-up, or elsewhere, that he has accepted. Scout and/or Rivals have also reported that Columbia has pending offers to several other outstanding linemen including Gavin Pascarella, a terrific player from California, Jack Templeton of Don Bosco Prep in New Jersey, defensive end Seyi Adebayo of Brophy Prep in Phoenix, Arizona and OG, Mike Pinciotti of St. Joseph's Prep in Philadelphia. Unless I'm mistaken, Andy Shalrack also attended St. Joe's.

Isn't Gerst a little bigger than what you have listed? More like 5' 9" and 175-180? My recollection is that Don Bosco's previous Ivy RB to go onto the Ivies, Joe Sandberg, was around the same size in HS.

Look down at the statements, close to 10 down and it'll say that Shad Sommers has committed to Columbia.

Milton High’s outstanding football lineman Shad Sommers – 6-foot-2”, 285 pounds – has committed to play football next year at Columbia University. He was recruited by several other schools, including Cornell, Harvard, Brown, Boston College and the University of New Hampshire.
