Recruiting and Hoops

I couldn't get to The Garden for the two Columbia basketball games there this weekend, but I enjoyed watching them on MSG on the DVR. Without stars Patrick Foley and Asenso Ampim, the Lions performed admirably, coming away with a good run in the first game against eventual chamo Virginia Tech and then winning the consolation game against Marist.

The women's team is up against NC State at home today beginning at 12:30, and it should be fun to see how the Lions match up against ACC competition on the women's side.

No News in New Haven

We are still in the most crucial period for class of 2013 recruiting, which makes Yale's inability to hire a new head coach by now more and more of a red flag. I can't imagine why things are delayed up in New Haven, but I can't believe this is the way they planned it. Stay tuned.

Waiting For...

I know most of you are intent on more recruiting news, but I am also excited about getting the info on the football team's official schedule for 2009. In the past, that schedule has usually been released the second week of January. I'm very curious about our out of league schedule other than the opener with Fordham.

Again, stay tuned.

Virginia Tech clearly handled the ball and passed it around better than Columbia. And their Vassello is a very good, complete player. But we weren't really outmuscled despite VT's height advantage or our missing two starters, or at all outclassed by them. Joe Jones' coaching and game plan was basically right on the mark, and his team stayed focused and competitive.

Sunday's come-from-behind win indicates that. Jones's charges held on, never lost their cool and came from 10 back to win by 5. (Last year, whenever Jon Baumann was double-teamed, there was much floundering and bumbling, he really was that important.) This coming Ivy season is starting to look very interesting indeed.

Kudos to whomever at CU chose Local West (again) as a pre-game party venue Saturday, too. The food was very good and the open bar was a nice, seasonally generous touch.

I thought that former Columbia Assistant and current VT HC Seth Greenberg could have been more gracious in his post-game interview. He basically said that he team played terribly, that they had better players than we do, and that they could defend the rim and we couldn't. Frankly, I thought he sounded like a jerk. We didn't have our two best players, we gave this ACC team all it oculd handle, and if we had shot a little better we might have pulled out the game. PS, Agho looks like he is going to be a very fine player for us. As far as the Yale HC job, why should any Columbia fan care about Yale football after Jack's boorish conduct toward Columbia?

I did not know about Seth Greenberg's comments. Which sound ungracious and uttered through resentfully clenched teeth, to say the least. But again, we were never outclassed by VT, and we gave them a good scare. Unlike St. John's!

Does anyone know, however, why both Foley and Ampin were out of action? No, we may not need them the 29th against NJIT (now coached by someone who was a Columbia assistant just last season). Yet we sure will as of January 17 for Cornell at home. (Much too, was expected of Brian Grimes this season; he's just had terrible luck.)

Foley is wearing some sort of protective shoe on his left (I think) foot. Out 2-3 weeks, according to the television announcers. Ampim was at MSG in street clothes. Announcers didn't talk about him.
