100 Days

100 Days to Go

As we hit the 100-day mark before the 2007 season finally starts, an anonymous commenter posted this info just after midnight:

"I just noticed some important changes in the football roster on the Columbia athletics website. Very big offensive tackle Ed Salter returns to the squad after apparently recovering from his ACL and possibly other injuries. He was a very good high school football player in Georgia and is still a potential standout at Columbia. Also, numerous players are shown as switching positions including Jason Pyles from quarterback to wide receiver, Pat DeFazio from offensive guard to nose tackle, Brendan Buckley from linebacker to free safety, Corey Cameron from defensive end to linebacker and Rich Ingold from defensive end to offensive guard. Pyles is an excellent athlete who could become a standout wide receiver. All of these changes make very good sense to me as every one of these players has a chance to make a significant impact at his new position. What do you think, Jake?"

First, I think it's important to remember that you sometimes need to check that ever-changing roster on the CU website 2-3 times a day! It's never a dull moment over there!

Indeed these are all nice developments, especially the return of Ed Salter, who swells our current ranks to 102. I expect there to be more shifting in the coming weeks and again during training camp.

Perhaps one of the most telling switches is Jason Pyles' move from QB to WR. Since Pyles did a decent job under center in the spring game, I think this means that transfer Shane Kelly is going to be given a legitimate shot to play as a starter by next year. With M.A. Olawale already in the mix as the backup to Craig Hormann, this would leave Pyles at fourth on the depth chart at least.

Blogging will be light for the next few days as I will be travelling, but please feel free to post more comments and send any emails to novak.jake@gmail.com

If Criag Hormann's health is o.k., we will have three talented quarterbacks going into the Ivy League season in Hormann, Shane Kelly and M.A. Olawale, and two promising freshmen in Paul Havas and Cory Clare. Not bad at all.

What about morale? Kelly didn't come here to sit on the bench. I suppose it is academic if as Vinnie said he will get a third year. But then we MUST get MA on the field in a slash capacity.
