I can't say who is on the short list for the vacant head coaching job at Columbia, but there are some things I can clear up that seem to have a number of readers confused:

1) This is by no means an "undesirable" job. The inbox is full for the three point men accepting inquiries and resumes for the position. Let's stop negotiating against ourselves, (as some astute commenters have said), and trashing the job.

2) Recruiting goes on; it really never ends. There will be some recruits who will decide not to come to Columbia because of the coaching change, but probably no more than three or four. On the flip side, whomever comes in as the new coach will most likely bring in a few new players to fill that void.

3) THREE players, one current sophomore, one current junior and one current senior, are taking an advisory role on the search committee. They will not have an official "vote" on the candidates.

FCS Playoff Update

Stony Brook squeezed out a 31-28 win over Columbia's week two opponent in yesterday's round one of the FCS playoffs.

How great would it be for Columbia to play on those playoffs one day right on Kraft Field?

Attention Ivy presidents: EVERY Ivy football fan and player wants the chance to play in the FCS playoffs. How about granting a simple wish to some kids who actually show a commitment to their schools?

The perfect Amiker analogy for football would be Turner Gill. Great player at Nebraska and CFL. Great HC at buffalo (turned a crap program around in 3 years). Didn't work out for him at Kansas. Could be enticed to Ivy???

Ivies participate in NCAA National Championship for other sports. Why do they treat football differently? The Ivy football champion should have an automatic spot in the national D 1 AA tournament.

As a formality the NCAA does invite the IVY League Champion to the playoffs (because they have an automatic bid) however due to the tradition and Ivy league rules the invitation is declined. This is my understanding ... correct me if I am wrong.

Gill sounds perfect. And after living in Buffalo, I'll bet he doesn't think of NYC as a recruiting obstacle. Only way to find out if he can be "enticed" is to ask.

When it comes down to it there really is only one vote. Diane Murphy's. The committee will help her sort through the candidates, but, beyond that have no real power.

If I were to guess she will make an offer to someone within a week. It is possible she already has.

Are you guys sure you want Turner Gill? He totally bombed out at Kansas. The Jayhawks were so anxious to get rid of him after two horrible years that they are asorbing the remaining three years on his contract--$6,000,000. I would look for a winner to bring an Ivy League Championship to Columbia.

Earlier this year, Holy Cross renewed Tom Gilmore's contract for three years and the AD described him as one of the best football coaches in America. However, HC probably would not stand in Gilmore's way, if he wanted to go someone elese. In my opinion, Gilmore and Whipple are heads and shoulders above any of the other candidates mentioned on this blog.

Columbia Men's basketball crushed Swarthmore 104-42 at Levien tonight. Lions completely dominated their overmatched opponent.

Maybe we should play some D3 football teams too?

4:54 am:

Hope you are right and we are going to announce our new coach soon. The longer we wait the more we will be competing with other schools.

Would be thrilled to hear we actually identified our top candidate early and then went out and got him for once.

Diane Murphy does not have the final vote. Bill Campbell, a hugely unsuccessful coach at Columbia, has the final vote! He has manipulated the decisions for years that is why the Lions are in last place.
