The new Class of 2015 t-shirt is here.

Wyatt Baker

Incoming wrestling freshman Wyatt Baker was just named male athlete of the year by the Orange County Athletic Directors Association.

Baker is the enormously talented wrestling AND football player from Servite High School who could truly boost both teams at Columbia if he chooses to play both sports.

We'll see what he decides.

This is a message to all College alums who haven't been attending their class reunions. I have been spending the past weekend on campus. If you haven't experienced one recently, don't miss your next one. They are terrific fun, and the administration is doing a great job in making these weekends special. PS, the campus never looked better.

I took my 16 year old on the tour in March. Campus is indeed in very good shape. Admissions office overrun with >150 people in the session we attended. Me thinks this is going to the heads of the Admissions staff as they were a tad snooty and stuffy sounding. Acted as if they were Harvard or Princeton. Hopefully, just a bad day but not the friendly experience I remember back in 1977!

One of the speakers to my class said that kids who want Columbia and don't apply early have a 1 in 30 chance of being admitted. Most diverse class in the Ivies, need blind admissions, highest SATs of incoming first years in school history.

Underneath the photgraph you have "Wayne Baker." Of course, it should be "Wyatt."

It was a great insight on the part of former CU President Rupp -- can't recall his first name - that the desirability of a college varies directly with the number of applicants: the more people who apply, the more other people will want to apply. For this reason, admissions officers will often talk up the number of applicants, the difficulty of getting in, and so forth, and many families lap it up. But one thing I learned at Columbia was how to recognize bulls**t when I see it.

A friend of mine (from class of 82) has a daughter at Barnard (class of 2014). She said the acceptance rate this year was 6.7%. Bloody insane.

All the more respect for our footballers who both manage to get in and also manage the workload once they are here.

This is at least twice as selective as Penn or Cornell...probably neck and neck with HYP.

One big reason apps are up is CU's adoption of the common aplication. That means that anyone with access to a copy machine and the cash to pay for an additional app can apply without much effort. It probably puts kids who can't afford to spend hundreds of dollars on applications at a disadvantage.

Jake, our incoming football class includes some unbelievable student-athletes including John Brady, the 6' 220 pound linebacker from Lakota East High School in Ohio. Brady, was selected to play in the Southwest Ohio Football Coaches Association East West All Star Game this Thursday night. Attached is the link. Incidentally, Brady had a 33 on ACT and will major in biomedical engineering at Columbia. I don't hink he's going to have trouble learning the playbook.

Can't we stick to football. Does anyone have any insight into whether Wyatt will play football?

I would be surprised if Wyatt plays football. Two sports at an Ivy school is a killer. I have a great deal of respect for the very few that have successfully done it in the past.

Although I would love to see the aptly-named Wyatt Baker play football for the Lions at Baker Field it is very unlikely to happen. Baker committed to Columbia Wrestling and not Columbia Football. Wrestling is a very demanding sport and the Lions compete against the very best teams in the country, including two other very strong Ivy League teams, Cornell and Penn. For Baker to be successful against that level of competition, he will almost certainly have to concentrate on wrestling year round.

It would be a miracle if Baker played football as well.

Re common application: Columbia was the only Ivy school not to accept the common application until this year.

Sorry '77 but you got in at the nadir of Columbia College public approval.
