Speed from the Big Easy
Maurice Rothschild: So fast he's a blur
A reader sent me this link to a great video of incoming freshman Maurice Rothschild from New Orleans.
At 5-10 and 165 pounds Rothschild better be fast, and this video sure seems to prove that he is.
The scouts seem to have Rothschild pegged as a cornerback for college play, but every highlight in the video has him playing QB or WR. This, despite the fact that he was his district's co-offensive MVP.
The way Rothschild plays quarterback reminds me a lot of an old Oklahoma star named Jamelle Holieway.
But for Columbia's purposes, Rothschild is one of many members of this incoming class that sure seems to have put an emphasis on team speed. After the 2006 season, improving team size was obviously a recruiting priority, now speed looks to have been a key goal.
And since we don't yet know all the names on the class of 2014 list, who knows what other speedsters might be on the way?

His correct height and weight are clearly stated at the head of the video.
Okay, I hope he really is 6-0 and 180... that means he's REALLY fast for his size.
And as a matter of fact, most scouting services list him at WR, which is where I think he'll play for the Lions (we already have plenty of depth and talent at DB).
If his video is as reflective of his ability as that of Knowlin's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_SP6wFIWXI), he'll be a good one!
Video lists his first position as WR. He ran the fastest 40 (4.5) at a big recruiting camp. Terrific all-around athlete who should be a standout for us at receiver and maybe kick returner. Coaches should be drawing up a play for him -- wide receiver end-around with option to run or pass...would be hard to stop.
Based on his video and honors such as district co-Offensive Player of the Year, Rothschild looks like money in the bank!
A WR in our system has to be able to block in order to see a lot of playing time. This young man seems to have good hands and the ability to make plays after the catch. He can probalby line up in the backfield in a wildcat formation.
He is a great talent and is truly an athlete. Period. He's athletic enough to thrive at several positions. That being said, I've seen him in person and he's certaintly not 6-0. 5-10 sounds right
Will you buy 5-11? ;)
Another positive for the Lions is that Anthony Maddox is slated to return this fall after missing his entire sophomore season with an injury. Maddox was one of our fastest and best players as a freshman. He really stood out on both punt coverage and kickoff returns.
Was Maddox benched for a while, inexplicably?
No, he was injured.
