Hanging Without Chad?
When Musgrove was Lost, JoJo Smith picked up the slack and then some (CREDIT: Columbia Athletics)
Hopes remain high that cornerback Chad Musgrove will return to the team this season, but a look at last year's stats shows just how well the Lions reacted when Musgrove abrubtly left the team before the Yale game. Columbia's strong defense, especially against the pass, could have used the news as an excuse to let down. Instead, it got even tougher, even though without Musgrove it faced some of the best passing teams in the Ivies in Harvard and Brown.
The numbers don't lie:
With Chad: (6 games)
Opponents' Comp-Att Pct: 93-154 60.3%
Opponents' Yards Passing: 952 (158.6 per game)
INT: 10
TD: 6
Without Chad: (4 games)
Opponents' Comp-Att Pct: 53-93 56.9%
Opponents' Yards Passing: 545 (136.2 per game)
INT: 5
TD: 2
There's no doubt that if Musgrove returns, he will only make a good situation better. Tad Crawford is of course gone to graduation, but much of his value in the secondary was stuffing the run. In any event, the starting corners from Columbia's last four games last season, JoJo Smith and Eugene Edwards, will be back.

Chad is a natural free safety; but he is multi-talented and can return kick-offs, possibly punts, and take a few reps at WR on passing situations.
Chad is absolutely a great all-around talent, and I am positively praying he will return. But the point of this post was to give props to the DB's and corners who really did a great job without him as well.
Was Chad's injury serious? Is he rehabing over the summer or is he expected to miss a part of the 2007 season?
chad was not injured. He left school for personal reasons.
I believe Chad is set to return to school this Fall; not sure if he will be eligible, or if he will have to wait to '08.
Jake,
How about some analysis of incoming freshmen around the league, in terms of impact players. Usual caveat that everything posted by Cornell boosters about Cornell recruits is over the top; likewise Asia Sunset and Penn recruits.
Yea, I'd be interested in hearing more about some of the other recruiting classes, to see how they stack up to ours.
Who is Asia Sunset? Is that really someone's screen name that comments on Football websites? What a loser. Penn sucks
Asia Sunset is a tireless apologist for Penn sports. He seems to have the uncanny ability to obsess on the most intimate details of the private lives of every Penn athlete. He can tell you what most of these people had for breakfast that day. And in his world, Penn is a shining city on top of a hill. Weird.
Hey, Asia Sunset is a smart guy who knows a lot about Penn sports. All sports fans should be as thoughtful as he is. If I was a Penn fan I'd be proud of their football and basketball teams too. And I wouldn't call their recruits overrated until we start beating them.
Check out http://www.voy.com/152805/ if you want to see lists of names and thoughts on the recruits of the other Ivies. You'll have to go into the back pages and hunt around since those discussions were held in the Feb to May timeframe.
Leonidas
Who are the kick-off and punt returners on the team. If I recall correctly, Josh Williams returned some kick-offs last year, but I do not remember if anyone returned punts besides Tad Crawford. Any kickoff or punt specialists in the incoming class?

Oh, so in other words he's not a loser, he's a total loser. Thanks for the info.
