Revisionist History

Do you remember us Cliff? We remember YOU!

Penn's longtime linebackers coach Cliff Schwenke is retiring from football after 35 years on the sidelines.

There is no denying that Mr. Schwenke was a great coach and that he molded many great linebackers at Penn over the last 11 years.

But there is apparently something he, and/or Penn is denying.

You see, Cliff Schwenke spent two years coaching at Columbia. In fact, he was the head freshman football coach for two seasons, 1977 and 1978.

In '77 the frosh team was 2-4, with big wins over Lafayette and... Penn. In '78, the team went 1-5, routing Laffayette and barely losing to Penn in the season finale.

But his resume on the Penn website, (see link above), not only doesn't list those years at Columbia, but it claims he was at Boston College and Holy Cross in 1977 and 1978! And people do remember him on Morningside during those seasons.

Now let me offer one possibility, (because I don't like accusing people... or even people in the Penn athletics dept. of lying), could Mr. Schwenke have coached at BC and Holy Cross and Columbia at the same time? I suppose it's remotely possible, kind of like a "Big Love" for football... but I just can't believe it.

It seems a little more likely that Schwenke or someone in the Penn athletics department decided that two years at Columbia wouldn't look good. I suppose the scores of former Columbia assistants now coaching at big-time colleges and NFL teams don't count.

I know my readers don't need any more reasons to be angry at Penn. And I've said many times on these pages that the Quakers deserve bragging rights over us until the Lions can actually beat them. But this "omission" is beyond the pale.

As for Schwenke himself, the fact that he spent two years working under the great Bill Campbell would look good on his resume now. Too bad no one will know that.

As proof that Mr. Schwenke was the Freshmen coach in 1978 see page 16 of the attached. It talks about Randy Pearce getting his Freshman Numerals at Columbia which was coached by "Cliff Schwenke".

Is he the creep who was calling our kids "bush league" before the Penn game during NW's first season? I'm sorry Jake, but I hate Penn and everything about that place, including the bellyaching about our band after the basketball win last Friday. Those guys can't lose enough. I guarantee you that the omission was intentional.

Honestly, talk about the pot calling the kettle black. For Penn backers to suggest our band was ... vituperative... it's just plain nuts. It is just sophomoric humor no less, and I am sure the final score of the game had a lot to do with the sour grapes attitude of the Penn bloggers. It is a college basketball game, for god's sake. Does anyone from the University of Pennsylvania know about this Foehi guy who infests the "other" Ivy league sports site, and his constant frank, and scathing assessments of our athletic endeavors? Where is the civility there? Just wondering.

Surprised to hear about this Coach Schweppes or whatever, but nothing about Penn surprises me. I can only guess that the credit of being a freshman coach was not enough - possibly not so much the Columbia credential. Kind of a joke, sometimes people inflate their resumes, this guy took something off!

well, Jake, only about 53 days or so until the Spring game - can't wait.

Jake:

Why did you not contact the coach for his comments and give him an opportunity to respond before you posted this blog?

Coach Schewnke was our Defensive Coach in 1976 (Tom Levine was head coach of Frosh that year) I believe he coached the frosh for two more years before moving on. I have seen Coach Schwenke at a few games over the years and he has gone out of his way to say hi to me.....He was a tough coach and he is a better person, congrats to him for making it in a very tough profession.

I have a feeling the Athletic Office created that bio and the heat really shouldn't be on the coach.

Friend 12's probably right. When's the last time a busy coach read the puffery on his AD's website? Their PR guy, however, should be moved to their fiction writing program.

Band--gate has been the subject of pretty funny analysis by Ben Cotton in Spec. Apparently Penn is blaming its loss to us last Friday on our Band! And Jake, has taken a shot on voyforums for this blog to boot. Amazing how sensitive those great Penn fans can be.

foehi is offended by Jake's blog; I think Jake should publicly apologize to foehi.
