Another Likely Lion

Go East Young Man (CREDIT: OCVarsity.com)

The emails started coming at me yesterday with links to published reports about wide receiver Christian Daniel from Canyon High School in Orange County. Apparently, he has verbally committed to Columbia but is still holding out hope of walking on at UCLA. And it looks like he was recruited by Northwestern, Stanford, Harvard and Penn.

Daniel had good senior year stats, with 36 catches for 633 yards and 8 TD's, he also played well as a defensive back.

At 6"4 and 195 pounds, he already has the size the compete at the collegiate level.

There is no doubt he would be a great "get" if he sticks with his decision to come to Columbia.

I think some of the comments in the last post discussing why it would be better for young Mr. Daniel to come to New York make for some interesting reading, :).

Very nice story in today's Columbia Daily Spectator on sophomore linebacker Lou Miller

On Daniel, my feeling is that the coaches should tell him, "Give us a 100% commitment now or we'll have to fill in your place with someone else." I don't know whether that's allowed, but I think it's appropriate. Kids shouldn't make a promise and waver at the same time.

Somebody should tell this young man that WRs at UCLA are a dime a dozen and major in basket weaving.

but what if he wants to major in basket weaving? I guess that would put Brown in the running...

That's an unfair dig at Brown. If you really want to major in basket weaving in the Ivy League, than the place to go is Cornell where course of that type are readily available to undergraduates.

Observation of the year goes to Chris Daniel (see below). Even those of us who grew up on the west coast now look at it the other way, however: Anaheim Hills is completely different than anything in New York City. Either way, four years in NYC is a gift--enjoy it and make the most of it.

PERK CITY

Recruiting certainly can be stressful for student-athletes but it also offers perks. Just ask Christian Daniel (6-3, 190) about his weekend.

The Canyon wide receiver/safety took an official recruiting trip to Columbia and experienced New York for the first time.

During his trip, he visited the New York Mercantile Exchange and Ground Zero. He also rode a subway for the first time.

When asked what he liked the most about the subway, Daniel replied, "It's completely different than anything from Anaheim Hills."

He wouldn't be the first to make the jump. I'm from Anaheim Hills and came out to play for the Lions from 2001-2005. Current RB Ray Rangel, like me is from Anaheim Hills and went to Servite HS. I'm no doubt sure that Daniel would be able to use Ray as an asset in adjusting to CU and the city. While it is very different, I'd say it was easier for me to adjust than some of my teammates that had trouble coming from Alaska, Kansas, or Montana.

As of today's online newspaper pages, Daniel and Lopez from Southern CA will report to Wilson.
