New SideLion Report

Jordan Davis was a big week 2 star (CREDIT: Columbia Athletics)

The latest edition is up at GoColumbiaLions.com and boy, is it stirring. It's a look back at last week's win and a look ahead to the Princeton game.

Kudos to Joe Case for producing these pieces and the folks in the department for making them available so quickly.

There appear to be a lot of changes in the two-deep.

They need to find people who can stop the run. I think the idea of going with such light D-Lineman is not working. If need be, they should put some current OLs in the middle on defense to plug the running lanes because what they are doing now isn't working.

There is a definitive mindset difference between "O" and "D" linemen. O-linemen are passive agressive types. D-linemen attack.

So, its not clear to me that slotting in bigger/passive guys into the middle of the d-line will work....

You guys seem to be laying it all on the down linemen but from what I've been looking at the inside backers have not been filling the gaps with authority. True a hard-to-move presence in the middle is always a big plus in the 3-man front.

As Dr.V said, our game notes are now posted and the personnel changes on the 2-deep are quite interesting. On the offensive side of the ball the only change I noted is that Jamal Russell is listed as the back-up tight end. I believe he missed the first two games with an injury. If's he's back, that's very good news for the offense. There are more extensive changes on defense. For example, I note that Jo Jo Smith and Bayo Aregbe are not listed, presumably due to injuries. That's not good news for the defense. On the other hand, I like the fact that Justin Masorti and freshman Matt Moretto are listed as the starters at Inside Linebacker. Masorti and Moretto looked like a winning combination for the Columbia D in the last quarter of the Marist game. I'm also happy to see sophomore Grant Jefferson from Texas listed as a starter at cornerback as he has the athletic skills to be an outstanding football player at Columbia. (I wish we had two dozen other players from Texas) Finally, it looks like we have added some size on the defensive line now that Matt Bashaw is listed as a starter at right defensive end and freshman Brian England is the back-up nose tackle. Finally, Augie Williams, a freshman from San Diego is listed as the backup safety. Go Lions!

i dont think passive is the right word to describe o-linemen. obviously, they attack in the run game, and to the untrained eye it may look like they are passive in the pass game. look closer, though, and youll see its a battle in the trenches every single play and those who are passive do not see the field.

It appears that some posters are appluading change simply for change sake. The Lions run a very intricate defensive playbook that takes a season to learn. Being big or quick are great attributes but you have to be counted on to be in the right place at the right time. No different with the notion that you can teach an offensive lineman whose reactions have been honed to lock up with an opposing player to do the complete opposite and learn to shed a blocker while never losing sight of the football. It can't happen over night! We have a lot of smart, talented defensive players who may have been trying to do too much to make up for the missing injured starters or maybe they started reading their press clippings and thought they could be all things for the defense. The defense will be back when it plays as a unit with experienced players. I think the issue will be the ability for the offense to move the ball on a consistent basis and prevent the critical turnovers.

Sorry but D-line is not that complicated. It's even less complicated when you are at NT. You are responsible for taking on the center and guard so that the LBs can make plays. I don't care what the complicated schemes are, you have to kick someone's ass at some point. So far no one on the D-line is doing that, and that's the biggest problem. Doesn't surprise me since our NT is 230 lbs. which is just not big enough.

Wow, the video is inspirational. Makes you want to get out and hit someone (legally of course).
