Updated Lion Recruit List

Thanks to the VOY sports board poster "Leonidas," we have two new names to add to our list of Lions recruits for the class of 2011. First is offensive lineman Tim Skalak of the Central Catholic High School Crusaders from Canton, Ohio.

Next is Josh Smith, Of the Forest Hills Northern High School Huskies from Grand Rapids, Michigan area. Smith has also down some work on stage, so perhaps we have another Matt Fox, Ed Harris or Brian Dennehy in the making?

Both seem like great kids. Below is the recruit list as I know it. NOTE, the official list has not yet been released by Columbia. But I've heard we are bringing in 37 guys and now I have the names, (I think), of 25 of them.

1. Ben Britzius C Wheeler (GA)

Did we lose Skalak along the way? When do we see the official list?

I think there are a number of names that may not make the official list but will be with the team. I think we'll see our list next week on the Columbia website.

Let's hope the AD will provide even a brief blurb on each recruit, as Cornell does.

The release of our list is in the hands of the admissions office; NW will release when admissions says so. Insiders already have the list but so long as there is a Penn out there looing to unhook people we will not release names until the incoming players sign on the bottom line.

This is starting to sound nuts. We don't have enough confidence that we can keep the people whom we've recruited?

Hey Doc V, it's not a true lack of confidence but say a Penn rb recruit at the last minute gets a push from say Harvard which might have been his 1st choice school or even maybe he gets a late bid from a school like Stanford. Once he bails on Penn they start getting hard up for a rb recruit and they go back to someone they had talked to earlier that now appears headed to CU but maybe he really wanted to go to Penn. See what I mean? This is what makes coaches paranoid without a true letter of intent to bind a player, otherwise the recruit list would have been out already.

It happened at Bergen Catholic a few years ago. We had a DT who committed to us. The HC at BC, Fred Stengel, spoke with the Penn staff and then the kid wound up at Penn, where he became an all Ivy DT. Penn is the worst.

It's not Joe Smith, but Josh Smith. He is a great kid! Bench presses 315, squats 600, runs 4.69 forty, played QB, LB, RB/TE, and DE. Was All-Conference as TE, All Area as DE. 3 sport, and at beginning of June will compete in the state track meet in shot put (51') and discus (151')

Thanks so much for the correction, I will change the record right away. (I guess I was thinking too much of the new Mets relief pitcher: Joe Smith).

Not paranoia, but very good common sense for the current Columbia Coaching Staff to release its recruit list as late as possible. Ask Coach Bob Shoop. Three years ago he lost a top quarterback recruit, Billy Tapp, to the University of Mississippi, his only running back to UCLA and probably his best defensive lineman to Northwestern. If those guys had not switched schools, Coach Shoop might still be coaching at Columbia. Want some more famous examples in another sport, namely basketball: Bill Bradley eventully decided to go to Princeton rather than his initial choice of Duke, and Art Heymann selected Duke over his original choice of the University of North Carolina.

How did those three guys who we lost do? the RB was going to walk on at UCLA; the QB was a heartbreaker--we had him until he got a D1 scholarship (not sure how he did); I don't remember the DL who went to Northwestern. But I do agree with you that posting anything before a signed acceptance is dangerous -- especially with bottom feeders like the Penn coaching staff in our league, who will trash us just for the sport of it.

My understanding is that the running back who walked on at UCLA rather than attending Columbia never saw any varsity action at UCLA and left the team at the end of his freshman year. He probably would have started at tailback as a freshman if he had attended Columbia. Bill Tapp is listed as one of several back-up quarterbacks at the University of Mississippi. If he had attended Columbia he probably would be behind Craig Hormann at QB. Tayolr Highlen was a first team all-state defensive lineman from Arizona who chose Northwestern over Columbia. He has seen limited action at Northwetern. At 6-3 290, he undoubtedly would be starting at defensive tackle if he had chose to attend Columbia.
