My Message to the Graduates: Don't Fumble!

The Columbia Spectator says "Lost" star and former Columbia football player Matthew Fox, (class of 1989), will speak at the Columbia College "Class Day" graduation ceremony. Perhaps Fox will spend some time defending the good things athletics and athletic programs do for Ivy League schools, including bringing kids from Wyoming like him to New York City when they otherwise would never have left their hometowns.

I don't watch "Lost," but I used to check out "Party of Five" years ago and I always though Fox was a good actor. The fact that he regularly talks of his experiences as a Columbia football player is gratifying to say the least.

Fox joins other actors like Brian Dennehy and Ed Harris who have a connection to Columbia football. Dennehy is a pretty visible supporter of the program, and I hope someone from the athletics department has the smarts to grab Fox during graduation week and convince him to make some appearances as well.

What I want to know is why basketball junkie Barack Obama doesn't have more to say about his time at Columbia College. If he is blowing off Columbia, there is no way he gets my vote. Bad enough that he roots for Brown in mens' hoops; I don't care if his brother in law is the coach.

Obama keeps saying in most interviews that he was just trying to straighten out his life when he was at Columbia. I can believe that considering where he came from. If he's still in the race when the New York primary rolls around, I guarantee he'll play up the CU connection.

Interesting comment,Jake. Do you know something we don't know about Obama. Do you really think he's going to drop out of the Presidential race? By the way, I agree with your first blogger. My Columbia family and friends are not going to vote for Obama unless he says something positive, quickly, about Columbia. We want to read that he attended Columbia College and not that he made law review at Harvard. I assume Obama received some financial assistance to attend Columbia so for that alone he should be grateful.

I actually don't think he's going to drop out, but he may not make it as far as the New York primary, because it seems like the frist 2-3 primaries are deciding everything these days.

The fact that Columbia has been quiet about Barama is cause for suspicion. He has not been honored in any way whatsoever by his alma mater. There is a story here. Our College is usually quick to go public about our alumni who have achieved fame. Why not here? Jake, you should be able to smoke this one out.

That's actually a very good point. But there's very little Obama could have done as a student to disqualify him for Columbia "love" as out-and-out troublemakers like Mike Rudd of the '68 riots fame are often welcomed back to campus. I have to assume this is something coming from Obama's end, and he may seek to rectify that by primary time.

No cover story on CCT, no award at the Hamilton dinner, no Jay medal, no invitation to speak at Class Day, no visits to campus. Call me a one issue guy, but if we have a disgruntled alum he never gets my vote, period.
