More Recruit Highlights

Ford City High School, home of the Sabres

Today I'd like to focus on Mike Egley, the DE/TE from Ford City High School in Kittanning, PA not far from Pittsburgh.

Egley's highlight video is now online and it looks like he has good size and strength coming out of that fertile football ground of Western PA. The Pittsburgh Post Gazette named him a first-team all-conference player on BOTH offense and defense.

According to his local paper, Egley says the CU coaches want him to play defense, and he only needs a little more weight to be an ideal type for DE.

On film, Mike Egley appears to have great acceleration on both sides of the ball,so he probably can play either tight end or defensive end in college. However, I really like this kid's size, speed and relentless pursuit of the ballcarriers on defense. Columbia was hurt by good running quarterbacks last year, and having some strong, quick defensive linemen like Egley, Kennedy, and Flemming, could really help. I also would like to see one of them beef up to about 250-260 by September to help at nose tackle.

Our edge control will be pretty good this year, our challenge is in the middle, NT, MLB and FS. If we step up in these spots after key graduation losses then Lou will have a field day! Overall, we've got a good looking class coming in longer on skill kids than I expected. We'll need a few more linemen in next years group to keep the pace. OL was bigger, stronger, faster in the spring game. lets hope they keep up with the lifting program in the summer. the new strength coach seems to be doing a great job for the boys. Big battle for our starting TE job next year, Anyone think Marino will use some twin tight formations to keep guys honest?

Middle linebacker is a team strength with Drew Quinn who is a junior team captain and one of the best MLB's in the Ivy League. The team will miss Adam Brekke, but has several strong linebackers returning including Justin Masorti, Bayo Aregbe and Lou Miller. Vaughn Hodges also had a good spring game. Several of the big freshman linebackers, such as Morretto, Holloway and Lenz, could help immediately. NT depth seems to be somewhat of an issue, although Eli Walz could be outstanding. There are about eight talented defensive linemen returning, but nearly all at defensive end. Obviously, there is an opportunity for one or two of the defensive ends to move to nose tackle. As to a double tight end formation, if Troy Evangelist and Jamal Russell are both healthy, I suspect we will see them both on the field in the red zone.

What is Masorti's status? Is Musgrove back? I see a lot of two TE formations; Russell is a Shannon Sharpe type who can split the seam; he just needs to make the catch.

Ferrari and company need to pull another Todd Abrams out of their hats by converting someone into a top-flight nose tackle. Eli Waltz may need another year, but maybe not.

Masorti will be back in the fall. I still don't know about Musgrove.

What about moving Moose Veldman to the nose?

That's not something I would be surprised to see. Veldman could plug up the middle nicely if he can make the transition.

Jake:

I missed something about Masorti. Did he leave school?

No he was just not in spring practice. I was assured he will be back for training camp.

Egley looks more like a LB to me. Good edge rusher. But Darren Schmidt played DE, and he was a lot smaller than Egley.

Who else played nose tackle besides Eli Waltz in the spring football game? Anyone know the status of Troy McHenry and Conor Joyce, the two big defensive ends who didn't play last fall because of injury/illness? And what about junior, Rich Ingold, who was a standout defensive lineman in high school in Ohio?

Conor Joyce played really well, but I'm not sure he was at NT for much of the game.

Troy McHenry was heavily recruited throughout the league but needs to get on the field and show what he can do. Great size and range for a DE.
