Favored Class

The just-released betting lines for this Saturday have EVERY Ivy team except Princeton favored to win!

(NOTE: I will NOT be making predictions on Columbia games for a number of reasons. This has always been my policy. Also, I want to make it clear that I ABHOR sports betting, but I do have the utmost respect for the odds makers who are eerily good at setting the betting lines for football. Like it or not, the lines are an important factor to consider).

Our Lions are six point favorites over Fordham.

Lehigh is a three point favorite at home over the rebuilding Tigers.

The biggest surprise to me was the 7 ½ point line favoring Brown over Stony Brook. I think Brown is good and certainly can win, but Stony Brook looks stacked and I don’t see them losing by more than a TD.

Lafayette takes the hardest hit after its loss to Georgetown and the injuries in the game. The Leopards are now whopping 11 1/2 point underdogs to Penn at Franklin Field.

Georgetown gets no love after beating Lafayette. The Hoyas are 11 1/2 point dogs at Yale.

Harvard is just a three point favorite at home over Holy Cross.

Dartmouth gets just a four point cushion at Bucknell.

And Cornell is a 4 ½ point favorite at Wagner.

In other Columbia opponent news, week two foe Towson is a 31 point underdog at defending FCS champion Villanova.

What's the source for your odds?

As a recruiting tool, could Robert Kraft establish a program at CU whereby any player who both graduates and earns first team all ivy gets an automatic tryout with the Patriots? No sure if this violates any Ivy league or NFL rules but I think it might attract a couple of A-list D1 prospects here who might not otherwise come. Let's use the fact that one of our prominent alums owns a winning NFL franchise!!

Or perhaps he commits to having his scouts come to home games or look at game tapes. No obligation to sign, no interference with draft...and encourages both academic and athletic attainment. But something we can publicize to top talent that can get through Columbia academically. At a minimum it would give us a leg up on other Ivy teams.

Where can I find these betting spreads? I haven't seen an Ivy line posted anywhere since Jimmy the Gent Conway took the Lions in the Goodfella's movie.

That's right! He took Columbia over Dartmouth in that scene!!!

But I will not divulge the source of my lines.

Actually, the scene was in "Casino," not "Goodfellas." Same actor... and some would say, same movie.

In my daily cycle through the Ivy football blogs, I noticed a reference to supporting the Brown coach for Coach of the Year in 1AA. I decided to look at the leader board and saw that Coach Wilson is sitting in 10th place (way above the Brown coach). We should support Coach Wilson and see if something good happens! Also, it would be good if something like this got into the student body to give them a sense of contributing to bettering the program. The link for voting follows.

How about this suggestion for Mr Kraft - offer some summer internships for players with the Patriots. Post that on the football website and I guarantee you some high schooler will come for that reason alone! The idea may need a little fine tuning to stay away from NCAA infractions. LOL

Dartmouth is 2 touchdowns better than the Bison, even with the home field advantage. BEST BET

Have to take Lehigh in this spot.

The Brown game looks like a pick'em.

If the Hoyas compete in the 1st half in New Haven, then load up on the Quakers before the line moves.

Who can surface these suggestions to Mr Kraft?

Jake, do you know?

I have made a lifelong habit of following the Sandy Koufax model and sitting out on Yom Kippur. But I will be there in spirit.

Thankfully, the Chinese have no holidays this week other than to wish double happiness upon Lions. I will be at the game (driving from Boston). Please let the drive be worth it...Go Columbia!

Interesting that Harvard's Murphy and Penn's Bagnoli don't make the list. Any thoughts?

There are no Canadian holidays that coincide with the game on saturday either, so I intend to be there. Please ask the Columbia staff to line up my four free beers. It is best to have them ready, because ... I don't want to miss the game.

GO LIONS!!!!!
