Harvard LB Jon Takamura terrorized the Lions all day

Harvard 34 Columbia 14

Why Harvard Won

The Crimson never missed an opportunity. A short opening kickoff was turned into an efficient quick TD drive. A bad CU punt snap on the ensuing Lion possession was pounced on and turned into a second quick TD. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the Columbia sideline was turned into a field goal as time expired in the first half. The list goes on.

Why Columbia Lost

The Lions needed to play an almost perfect game, especially in the early going, to defeat Harvard. Instead, they looked confused in the first quarter and were down 21-0 early. Too many trips to the red zone resulted in no points and the defense could not contain Crimson QB Collier Winters when it mattered most.

Key Turning Point

-Already down 7-0, Columbia went three and out on its first possession of the game and a high snap on the punt was eventually recovered by Harvard at the CU 12. One play later, it was 13-0 Crimson.

Columbia MVP

There's not a lot to choose from here as far as finding one standout player, but I liked the game put in by both of Columbia's corners who were playing in injury relief. Sophomore Ross Morand had a pick and seven total tackles while senior Jared Morine had his third INT of the year and another pass breakup.

It seems like we never recovered from the heartbreak of the end of the Lafayette game. The Yale loss compounded matters. Doesn't the Princeton game seem like a distant dream now? Challenge for the coaching staff to convince people that they
can win every time they take the field. On a positive note, we got to see some new faces in the Columbia backfield. Not to create a quarterback controversy, but if MA is healthy, he needs to start again.

Trying to look at things constructively, I would agree with the good doctor that it is a positive sign for the Columbia Football Program that we have sen so many new faces in the Columbia backfield the last several weeks. We need to remember that these guys have seen very little varsity action until now so that it is not surprising that there have some miscues. However, on balance you have to like Sean Brackett's athletic ability, Leon Ivery and Zack Kouroumna speed and agility, Mark Muston's pass catching skills and Nico Pappas' toughness. We just need to hope that one or two of these guy step up and help the team win the final two games of the season.

Not having another player of Alex Gross' caliber to stop the opposition's star running back in his tracks has been a big problem for the defense. However, I thought Chris Paruch did a nice job at linebacker on Saturday and Nick Mistretta is coming on strong at middle linebacker. Do we know if any of the injured players will be returning for Cornell and Brown?

Another positive from the Harvard game is that our freshman place kicker hit both his PAT attempts. As anyone him kick off this season knows, he has a very strong leg, so I think he will develop into an excellent all-around place kicker for the Lions.
