ROSTER ADDITIONS

Kicking Help from Paradise?

BREAKING NEWS!!!

We have some new names on the Columbia roster at this hour, including a new kicker. Some of the players we learned about during the recruiting process, but they did not appear in the list of incoming frosh published in May. Presumably these are walk-ons, BUT I am not sure of that status.

Here are the newcomers:

1) Tai Izawa K 6-foot-0 155 lbs. Hilo High School Hilo, HI

Here's a YouTube video of some of his kicks and a quick piece about a game last year where he kicked three FG's, including a 40-yarder.

2) Cameron Ross WR 5-foot-10 176 lbs. Darien High School Darien, CT

I first saw items about Cameron Ross in the Darien paper several months ago. He spoke of how he was excited to come to Columbia. Now we know he is.

3) Josh Tobin DL 6-foot-4 245 lbs. Sidwell Friends Washington, D.C.

Had 118 tackles in a nine game season including three sacks. Played offensive and defensive line for Sidwell and made the all-city all star team for 2008.

Tobin is an intriguing prospect. He averaged 13 tackles a game from the DL. That is an incredible stat. If he were an LB or a SS, that would be one thing. But from a DL slot, it can only mean that he is breaking down blocks at the point of attack. And I seem to recall that Sidwell Friends has a pretty good program.

That kicker was kicking them in practice from 50 yards in the video, and his kick-offs were 60+.

Kicker Tai Izawa looks real good --50-yard field goals in practice with room to spare -- props to the coaches for solving (we hope) the problem.

Also good news about Tobin, but another DT? We're well-stocked there already, could have used a running back, imo.

Izawa is a huge addition because we only had one place kicker on the roster. Now we have one combo p/pk, one pk and two or three p's. As to Tobin, I suspect he's a very good player who will see action at defensive end or middle linebacker. You can never have too many 6'4" 245 lb defenders with his stats

Izawa was rated the 18th best high school kicker in the senior class nationally by one website

And for what it's worth, here's the URL from the same website with 2008 stats about Greg Guttas:

Realistically, how do you think Guttas and Izawa will do? After all, they are just freshmen
