Call for a Volunteer

Jared Duke

Columbia is in the running to land 6-foot-6, 336-pound Jared Duke of Walker Valley High in Charleston, Tennessee.

Duke tells Scout.com that Columbia has come closer to giving him a formal offer than any other team.

On another front, word has finally leaked out that Stanford safety Fred Craig, a truly fast and talented player from Cincinnati's St. Xavier High School, will be transferring to Penn. He'll be eligible to play right away and will probably shift to outside linebacker where he'll make more of an impact. Penn's stock has surely risen on this news.

At first, I thought about what this says about former Stanford assistant and new Yale Head Coach Tom Williams. But then an astute reader reminded all of us that Williams hasn't been at Stanford for awhile; he's coming to Yale directly from the Jacksonville Jaguars. But in my defense, all the headlines out of Yale about Williams really emphasize his years at Stanford... almost as if they were embarrassed by his NFL connections. But that's an oversight on my part and I'm going to fire some of my highly-paid research staff because of it.

Or you might ask, what does it say about the player? If Williams knows the player AND if he did know he was looking to transfer to an Ivy maybe he didn't feel he was that good. Maybe he never knew of his intentions but you would think if the kid wanted to go Ivy he would contact a former asst. that was now a head coach. Just have to wait and see what impact the kid has.

Jake:

"one of his former players"

The kid finished his frosh year at Stanford.

According to Yale bio, Tom Williams has not coached at Stanford in several years (not since 2004), so he could not have recruited nor coached him at Stanford:

2002-03 Assistant at Stanford (Co-Defensive Coordinator, Linebackers)
2004 Associate Head Coach at Stanford
2005-06 Assistant at San Jose State (Co-Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers) - 2006 New Mexico Bowl win
2007-08 Assistant with Jacksonville Jaguars (Defense, Special Teams)

Nice that NW is setting his sights quite high on the recruiting trail with Duke, but does CU have a realistic chance at landing a kid with that frame / talent sitting right in the heart of SEC country. I'm skeptical but hopeful the kid has parent who can see the value of an Ivy League diploma. Have to be impressed with NW for going for it...
