Tyree on a Tear

Incoming freshman defensive lineman J.D. Tyree was a key part of the West team's 7-0 shutout of the East at Friday's 2008 Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star Game.

J.D. had four tackles, and one of his hits on the East QB and caused a fumble. The West defense held the East scoreless for the first time in 14 years. In addition to starting at DE, Tyree also started on the kick off team, the kick off return team, the punt team, the punt return team, the field goal team, and the extra point team.

What makes Tyree's performance even more exciting was that he was matched up against the VA Tech bound Vinston Painter. Painter 6'5 300 lbs and was ranked #14 OT in the country by Superpreps.

Here is part of the VAPreps article by Rod Johnson:
..."Defenses ruled the turf at Darling Stadium in a 7-0 game won by the West...
Though the scoreboard was not lit up by the players (nor would it have mattered since it wasn't working anyway), that doesn't mean that several players failed to turn in stellar performances.
...Martinsville's J.D. Tyree (Columbia) made a nice tackle for loss early in the game helping to set the physical tone for the West squad.Richard Lockridge (Lebanon HS, Davidson) followed Tyree's lead early in the game with a big hit and Robert E. Lee defensive back Michel Steele chipped in with an outstanding open field tackle to bust up a bubble screen in the first quarter. The biggest hitter of the night was Amherst County's Derrick McCoy (Virginia Tech) who, along with scoring the game's only touchdown, was a terror in the middle of the field coming up with a full head of steam to punish one East runner after another."
If you enjoy stellar defense, this was a great game!

Impressive performance by J.D. Tyree against strong competition. He's a welcome addition to a defensive line that had only one standout performer last year--Phil Mitchell. The defensive line should be much better next season if guys like Tyree, Owen Frazer and Chris Groth can contribute immediately by pushing the veterans or even possibly winning starting roles. Any information how Shea Selsor did in his Ohio High School All-Star game?
