It's Never Easy

Week one opponent Fordham has just been chosen by the Patriot League coaches and sports information directors to repeat as champions.

I have some questions about the Rams' defense, but clearly everyone in their league is more impressed with returning junior QB John Skelton, and sophomore tailback Xavier Martin who ran all over Columbia last season in The Bronx.

... of course, these are the same guys who picked Fordham to come in last a year ago.

Jake, I just don't get it. I don't understand how Fordham has managed to recruit players good enough to win the Patriot League. I have to admit to an anti-Fordham bias. When I was at the College their basketball fans gave a close approximation of the Hitler Youth (this is no exaggeration), and I have never forgotten the reception that guys like Felsinger and Newmark used to get. But how does Fordham, with a high school field and mediocre academic standing, outrecruit the great Patriot League schools like Colgate, for example? I just don't believe that they have the same academic restrictions placed upon their coaches, and that they take kids that not even Penn or Cornell would or could touch. But in any event, you heard it here first. We will take those guys this year.

Fordham is still a pretty good school, and never underestimate the advantage they have with the kids at all those great Catholic high schools with great football programs. The campus is pretty nice too, if not in as good a location as Columbia.

But consistency is a big issue. They were an awesome team in 2002-2004, then seemed to let everything go.

I think they're overrated on defense this year, but we shall see.

"pretty good school," and "pretty nice" Bronx campus. Are your joking? It's all about academics for the respective football teams in the Patriot League. Otherwise Georgetown would go undefeated every year. Anyway, I like the idea of opening the season with the toughest team on the schedule. Fordham has several speedy running backs, an experienced quarterback and an offensive line averaging about 300 pounds. Not bad at all. On paper, none of the Ivies or Patriot League schools can match Fordham so we if do o.k. against the Rams, we should do just fine the rest of the season.

But you don't open with Harvard.

As the parent of a Georgetown undergrad I can tell you that there is no comparison between Georgetown and Fordham. Georgetown gets a student body which is pretty close to Ivy standards and at the top of the Patriot League. Fordham can recruit players that Georgetown, 'gate, Lafayette, Lehigh, etc. cannot touch. They have some real ringers at Fordham.
