Steve Cargile Update

Steve Cargile '04, looked good in the first preseason game for the Denver Broncos this weekend against the 49ers. He snared an interception and seemed ready to play. It looks like he'll have little trouble making the team if he keeps this up.
Cargile was one of the guys who made the 2003 season such an exciting one for Columbia fans. He's had trouble breaking in to the NFL, but things seem to be turning around now.
Local Ithaca Reporter Gets it Wrong
In this otherwise decent report on the Cornell training camp, the reporter talks about how camp lasts 32 days... which would be in violation of Ivy League rules. The Big Red will break camp in about 2 1/2 weeks and then go to a regular practice schedule. Cornell simply opens camp 32 days before the season starts because of an earlier start to classes.
Local Recruit?
A big fullback in my own backyard is getting a lot of interest from the Ivies and other schools like B.C., Virginia and Rutgers. I'm not sure if this young man is getting calls from Columbia, but he does attend a fine Catholic school called Chaminade which has sent numerous players to Columbia's football and basketball teams over the years, (including Brian Dennehy).

Question for Jake: your blog is really outstanding. However, I have a nagging concern? Are we doing a disservice to the program by blogging information which may be of value to our competitors? If one of our guys pulls up lame, or if we have question marks at offensive guard, for example, as much as we Columbia boosters are interested in this information are we giving something for free to Jack, Bags, etc.? Likewise little tidbits about recruiting: if you are on to a great player from Chaminade isn't it better just to email the coaches? I suppose the answer is that there are no secrets in this day and age, but I do wonder. That's why I for one am only interested in seeing positive information about our program posted here. I recognize that reasonable minds can differ.
You raise a good point. That's why I have some personal ground rules:
1) I NEVER disclose injury information.
2) I NEVER publish info that hasn't already been published elsewhere in papers or websites like Scout.com
And you should know that I have not published a ton of stuff that I was 100% sure about over the last two years. Now that I am connected to the program, I also have a pipeline to the powers that be to post questions to when I'm not sure.
One player missing from roster. Anybody know who it is?
Pat DeFazio
No, Pat DeFazio was gone earlier -- it's Troy McHenry.
Troy McHenry has highly rated going into his freshamn year and was widely recruited in the league. Yet he never got on the field. Does anybody know what happened? Were we counting on him this year?
Questions for Jake: 1. is MA going to be playing another position? 2. Why does Mettee have the same number as Kelly? 3. Is Veldman a candidate to be moved to NT? 4. Why is McHenry gone? 5. Are we going to scrimmage Dartmouth or Harvard again, as in years past? 6. Are you going to cover Monday's opening practice? 7. I understand that we have 3 incoming freshmen who would have been legitimate D1 prospects were it not for injuries--any truth to that?
1. As far as I know, Olawale is not being considered by the coaches for anything other than QB.
2. Don't get hung up on numbers... they'll change.
3. I think Veldman will stay at O-Line... the coaches are favoring lighter guys on the D-Line who are faster and stronger to compliment Mitchell's size.
4. McHenry has really been hurt for a long time, (this is a matter of record, NOT my reporting), I can't officially say that's the reason he's gone now, but I think the answers are obvious.
5. Last I heard, we are scrimmaging Harvard at HU on 9/1... but that has not officially been announced.
6. Probably can't make opening practice, but time-permitting I might be able to pop by.
7. I don't know about the third, if there is one, but Nico Gutierez at WR and Leon Ivery at RB fit that characterization. Grant Jefferson fit that bill last year.
5.
Thanks Jake. Certainly a few of our incoming guys have D 1 size.
Coach Wilson confirmed the Harvard scrimmage Tuesday night. He also indicated it'd probably be open to the public. "They have a big stadium up there," he said. "So Coach Murphy probably doesn't care if people sit in it and watch his team scrimmage."
RS
Oh, and there's also to be a genuine four-game JV season this year, too.
Why would you consider moving M.A. Olawale to another position when he is one of our two leading candidates to start at quarterback at least until Criag Hormann is cleared medically? Also, M.A. demonstrated some amazing athletic skills at quarterback as a freshman last year. His potential is huge. Shane Kelly also looks like a solid prospect, but hasn't been on the field yet at Columbia. The other two quarterback candidates are only freshmen so you can't expect them to see much playing time. Finally, Jason Pyles, has already moved from qb to wide receiver where big things are expected of him. So the coaches already made the decision to keep M.A. at quarterback. Let's see what happens in training came and thereafter. Keep in mind that whoever emerges as the quarterback behind Craig is likely to start the next two season. Let's see what happens.
I am assuming that CH is going to be fine. I am hopeful that we can get MA on the field in some capacity, because he does so much to throw off defenses.
